LOMBARD, IL – The American Planning Association Illinois Chapter (APA-IL) reached a historic milestone this month, hosting its 200th Plan Commissioner Training session since the program’s inception in 2011. The landmark event took place in the Village of Lombard, bringing together local commissioners, staff, and mentors for an evening of education, professional development, and, most importantly, a celebratory cake.
Since its launch 15 years ago, the APA-IL Plan Commissioner Training program has traveled across the state to help appointed officials navigate the complexities of local government. From understanding "Findings of Fact" to mastering the nuances of the Open Meetings Act, these sessions provide the foundational tools necessary for commissioners to make informed decisions that shape the future of their communities.
“We started this program in 2011 with the goal of training citizens who serve on the front lines of local government,” said Paula Freeze, APA-IL's Executive Director. “It reflects of the commitment Illinois' communities have toward excellence in planning and development issues.”
The Village of Lombard session featured the program’s signature interactive curriculum, allowing attendees to discuss the function of the plan commission, become better educated on urban planning, and talk through real-world issues in a low-pressure meeting. The evening concluded with a special celebration to honor the trainers, volunteers, and the hundreds of commissioners who have participated in the program over the last decade.
The APA-IL extends a sincere thank you to the Village of Lombard for hosting this milestone event.
The APA-IL would also like to thank Tom Farace, AICP for volunteering as the Planning Officials Development Officer, coordinating and continuing to evolve training throughout Illinois for the last 3 and a half years.
As the program looks toward the next 200 sessions, the mission remains the same: to empower citizen planners with the knowledge they need to build stronger, more vibrant communities across Illinois.
