Thursday morning, March 14th at DePaul University’s Loop Campus, the APA-IL's Chicago Metro Section (CMS) partnered with the university’s Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development and the Municipal Design Review Network (MDRN) to discuss the benefits and attributes of community design.
About 50 professionals in varied fields including urban planning, historic preservation, architecture, landscape design, and land use law, heard from Lesley Roth, Associate Principal and Director of Urban Planning at Ratio Design, and Scott Freres, the President and co-founder of The Lakota Group.
The session discussed how community character and urban design means different things to different people, and the importance of both enhancing the capacity and knowledge of the public, while also ensuring outreach is genuine and inclusive. Both presenters provided examples of outreach tools and techniques while sharing a diversity of case studies from Hawaii, to Minnesota and Wisconsin, to Waukegan and Chicago’s South Side.
