APA-IL Chicago Metro Section and ILASLA are partnering yet again for a planner and landscape architect’s look at adapting to climate change. This is the 4th event in the series!

Urban forestry, land conservation, tree and plant biomass conservation, and restored/preserved prairies are among the topics that will be discussed on Nov 2nd. Join us in the Ford Calumet Environmental Center and then lace up your hiking boots for a walking tour of Big Marsh!
This is a family-friendly weekend event, so feel free to bring the fam. And, since it’s at Big Marsh, consider loading up the mountain bikes and making an afternoon of it. Lunch will be provided.

Jack Eskin, AICP
Environmental Planner, HNTB
An environmental planner with over 12 years of professional experience, Jack works with public agencies on developing infrastructure projects that align with environmental protection and climate action priorities. This has included extensive work within the Calumet region, supporting agencies like the Illinois International Port District and the Indiana Lake Michigan Coastal Program. His background includes capital program management, brownfield redevelopment, green infrastructure planning, wetland restoration, climate action planning, NEPA, and grant writing. Prior to joining HNTB, Jack served as a Programs Lead at Delta Institute, the Deputy Director of Redevelopment at the City of Gary, and as a Regional Planner at the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC).
Sydney VanKuren, AICP
Climate Equity Planning Manager, Greenprint Partners
Sydney is a passionate environmental and urban planner with extensive consulting experience in the Chicago region and beyond. She is particularly interested in looking to the natural world for solutions to help communities realize their equity, decarbonization, and resilience goals, all while supporting the underlying natural processes that sustain us all. At Greenprint, Sydney manages Greenprint’s planning team in the development and implementation of equitable climate resilience programs, strategies, and plans. She earned a Masters of Urban Planning and Policy from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a B.S. in Natural Resources from Cornell University.
Jim Patchett
Sustainable Land & Planning Consultant
James Patchett, founder and president of Conservation Design Forum, is widely recognized as one of the nation’s leaders in the promotion of sustainable land planning and design. Jim applies his training and experience as a landscape architect, environmental planner, hydrologist, and restoration ecologist in the design and development of natural resource-based solutions that integrate state of the art green building and site infrastructure measures to restore historical ecosystem functions in both built and natural environments.
Joel Baldin, ASLA
Principal, Hitchcock Design Group
An award-winning landscape architect since 1993, Joel Baldin uses his extensive planning, design, and project management skills to guide many projects from vision to implementation. A graduate of Purdue University, his experience includes complex urban design projects, historic landscape rehabilitation, parks and recreation, streetscape and plaza design, college and university campuses, commercial real estate and multi-family housing. Joel is a regular speaker at national and regional conferences, focusing on topics such as economic redevelopment, restoration of natural and historic landscapes and best design practices.
