APA-CMS planners explored the outside factors that shape our cities on April 10th

The City of Naperville hosted the April APA-CMS program which discussed Developmental Rules of Thumb: The Regulations and Realities Every Planner Should Know. The session on April 10th, 2018 was attended by over 50 constituents. Speakers included:

  • Valerie Kretchmer, President of Valerie S. Kretchmer Associates, Inc.

  • Tim Kirkby, AIA, AICP, LEED AP, architect and urban designer with FARR Associates

  • Richard Piccolo, President and Founder of B&F Construction Code Services, Inc., and the Building & Fire Code Academy

Additional presentations were made by:

  • Kevin Steltzriede, Utility Specialist with the City of Naperville Department of Public Utilities- Water and Wastewater

  • Phil Watson, Lead Data Analyst with the City of Naperville City Manager’s Office

The presentations provided background information on the outside sectors and factors that influence the shape of our cities by exploring the critical intersection among market feasibility, physical design, building code regulations, and the planning/zoning fields in city governance.

Among the most helpful topics the attendees listed on the anonymous evaluation forms were: key methods in determining a market area, definition of the building code groups and their meaning, and updates that can be made to telecommunication ordinances in order to accommodate 5G and dark fiber proliferation.

Thanks for all in attendance and special thanks to the speakers! APA-CMS looks forward to the next session held in the suburbs!
