Investing in Future Planners: APA-IL DEI Committee Joins CMAP’s FLIP Program to Inspire Youth in Urban Planning
This June, the Diversity Equity & Inclusion proudly partnered with the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) to support CMAP’s 2025 Future Leaders in Planning (FLIP) program— an immersive experience that introduces high school students to the inspiring world of urban planning.
The DEI Committee enriched the students’ experience by leading a workshop focused on academic and career pathways into planning, tailored to help students turn their passions into purpose.
Committee members shared powerful stories, practical advice, and a clear message: planning is for everyone—and there’s no single path to get there. The workshop buzzed with curiosity and powerful exchanges between students and professionals empowered students to envision what their path into urban planning can look like.
By encouraging students to take ownership of their futures, the DEI Committee reinforced its mission to diversify the planning profession and empower future leaders from all backgrounds. The DEI Committee is proud to be shaping the next generation—and we can’t wait to see what these young changemakers will do next.
Huge thanks to CMAP who helped make this event an unforgettable moment of growth and connection. If you would like to make an impact, consider joining the APA-IL DEI Committee. Reach out to dei_chair@ilapa.org
